MS shuttering plates (steel form plates) are the workhorse of Indian column, beam and slab-edge formwork. This guide covers what they cost to buy and to rent, how the pricing is structured, and why steel plates often work out cheaper than plywood over the life of a project.

Plates are made from IS 2062 mild steel sheet with an angle-iron edge frame and stiffeners. Custom sizes are cut to order for repetitive work.
Purchase Price
- Basis: per kg of finished plate, or a flat per-plate price for standard sizes
- What raises it: thicker sheet (3 mm vs 2.5 mm), heavier edge frame, more stiffeners, custom sizes
- Life: 80–100+ pours if cleaned and oiled properly, so the cost-per-use is very low
Rental Rates
Shuttering plates are rented one of two ways:
- Per plate, per month — a fixed monthly rate per plate regardless of size band, or banded by size
- Per square foot of contact area, per month — total plate area × rate × months
Add a refundable security deposit, two-way transport, and GST. Damaged or bent plates on return are charged at a repair or replacement rate.

For repetitive column and beam work, steel plates almost always win on cost per pour. For a one-off exposed slab, plywood's finish may justify the higher per-use cost.
What Moves the Rate
- Quantity — a full site's worth of plates gets a better per-plate rate
- Duration — longer projects get a lower monthly rate
- Size mix — large 4×2 plates cost more per piece but cover more area per handling
- City / freight — steel is heavy, so distance from the yard matters
