How to Calculate Scaffolding Rental Cost for Your Project

September 9, 20266 min read

You can get a rough scaffolding rental estimate in about five minutes before you ever pick up the phone. This guide gives you the method we use internally, so you can sanity-check any quote you receive and budget your project properly.

The Basic Formula

For a facade or access scaffold, rental cost comes down to:

Covered area (m²) × rate per m² per month × number of months  +  transport (both ways)  +  refundable deposit  +  GST

For a shoring / slab-support job, it's usually priced per piece instead: number of standards, ledgers and jacks × monthly piece rate × months, plus the same transport, deposit and GST.

Step 1 — Measure the Covered Area

The "covered area" is the vertical face the scaffold covers, not the floor area of the building.

  • Measure the length of the wall the scaffold runs along (in metres)
  • Measure the height from the ground to the top working level (in metres)
  • Multiply them: length × height = covered area in m²
  • Repeat for each face of the building and add them up

Example: a house with a 12 m front wall worked to 10 m height = 120 m² on that face.

Step 2 — Apply a Monthly Rate

Rate per m² per month varies by city, quantity and how long you need it. Get this number from your supplier for your specific city — then the arithmetic is simple.

Step 3 — Add the Other Lines

  • Transport — delivery to site and collection at the end; depends on distance and load size
  • Security deposit — refundable after the material is returned and inspected; typically a multiple of one month's rent
  • GST — charged on the rental and transport; input-tax-credit eligible for registered businesses
  • Labour — erection and dismantling, if you want the supplier's crew rather than your own

Worked Example — G+2 House Facade

  1. Front + one side worked: 12 m × 10 m + 9 m × 10 m = 120 + 90 = 210 m²
  2. Duration: 3 months for plaster + paint
  3. Rental = 210 × (city rate) × 3
  4. Add: two-way transport + refundable deposit + 18% GST on rental and transport

Worked Example — Room Slab Shoring

  1. 10 ft × 12 ft room ≈ 11 m² of slab
  2. Cuplock towers or props at ~1.0–1.2 m spacing → roughly 9–12 support points
  3. Priced per piece (standards + ledgers + U-head jacks) × monthly rate × ~1 month (until the slab cures and is de-shuttered)
  4. Add transport, deposit, GST as above

Costs People Forget to Ask About

  • Minimum rental period or minimum order value
  • Charge for damaged or unreturned pieces
  • Whether transport is one-way or both-ways in the quote
  • Standby charges if the material sits idle on your site
